Sudan Speaking to a Special Session of the Human Rights Council on the situation in Sudan, the High Commissioner spoke out strongly against human rights violations since the coup of 25 October, and said she was heartened by reports that talks to restore civilian government are under way.
The role of Human Rights Institutions in a better recovery towards development beyond Covid-19 The High Commissioner addressed the conference of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions. Stating that one year and a half after the outbreak of COVID-19, we are still struggling with the effects of this devastating crisis, and that “recovering better from COVID-19 also requires mobilisation and active participation"
World Affairs Council of Philadelphia The High Commissioner addressed the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and all students participating in their Model UN Program and discussed their theme topic of Chile this year, through the “Beyond our Borders” series. She stressed the importance of aiming towards greater protection of social and economic rights, and the rights of indigenous peoples.
Climate Forum At the Leaders Dialogue of the Climate Vulnerable Forum of COP26, the High Commissioner urged urgent action – now – to produce real and decisive change.
Social security "Social security is a fundamental human right – indispensable for the exercise of many other rights, and necessary for a life in dignity," the High Commissioner said, recommending that states set up comprehensive social protection systems, to support more sustainable, resilient societies.
COP-26 meeting States attending the COP-26 meeting need to fulfil their existing climate finance commitments and immediately mobilize resources to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Respect to Human Rights The High Commissioner opened the seventh session of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on Transnational Corporations and other Business Enterprises with respect to Human Rights. She stressed the importance of the hardening of laws regarding business’ impact on society and the planet, as well as the rising threat to human rights posed by the triple planetary crisis: climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.
Launch of new training materials on Human Rights at International Borders The High Commissioner launched the new Trainer’s Guide on Human Rights at International Borders, developed in collaboration with UN Office of Counterterrorism. Stating that she trusts it will "help border officials and relevant actors to take a human rights-based and gender-responsive approach to border governance, including in the context of counterterrorism."
